The Employment of Rural Population of Russia in the Informal Sector

Abstract

The transition to market relations in the 1990s had as its consequence such processes as the growth of unemployment and poverty, changes in the labour market and the formation of various forms of self-employment. All of these led to the structural mobility in Russian agriculture, transformed the rural social structure and gave rise to the informal sector that now provides employment for one third of the rural population.
