Despite various simplifications and patriotic rigor the picture of modernizing process appears very complicated in the works of the Chinese social scientists,
and the very process as having many aspects. They urge to «avoid linear thinking» characteristic not only of the classical theories of modernization, but of the «new left» and liberal westernizers in China as well.
