The article is based on the results of individual in-depth interviews with
the volunteers who participated in the elimination of the consequences of the fire in the
Institute of Scientific Information on Social Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences
(2015). The main topics of conversation were the fire and its consequences, the informants’
experiences of volunteering, the risks and dangers of life in a big city.
