Integration of Immigrants in Russia: An Equation with Many Unknowns

Monusova G.А.

Abstract

This article offers a critical look at the current discussions of migrant integration in Russia. The concept of «integration» is analyzed in relation to today's Russian reality. As the author shows, on the one hand, researchers offer different definitions of the concept of «integration» and give contradicting interpretations. On the other hand, main agents of the process (migrants, the population and the authorities of the receiving countries) show little interest in the «integration». The government cannot decide whether migrants are needed and what policy towards them is optimal. The population is hostile to foreign migrants, while migrants themselves do not intend to live in Russia and to «integrate». Thus, the process of «integration of migrants» in Russia becomes an equation with many unknowns, which has no solution.
