The Development of the Far East as a Geostrategic Challenge. The Case of the USSR and Present-Day Russia

Abstract

The article explores the Soviet and modern Russia’s geostrategy in the Russian Far East. The decisions of the Soviet authorities aimed at the development of the region followed the geopolitical logic of the Russian civilization. The Far East maintains the strategic importance for modern Russia too. Nevertheless, the current industrial and demographic situation in the region presents a serious problem. The article concludes that the improvement of the economic situation in the Far East depends on systemic changes in the sphere of economic regulation.
