The paper deals with the rumors and evidence facts about Nestor Makhno
that are provided by writer A.A. Saksaganskaya in her unpublished memoir «Makhno.
Under the black flag». The image of Makhno, his military tactics and some military
operations had certain representation in the urban society of the time. The analysis of the
memoir allows to restore this representation. Makhno appears to be a fearless hero, a cruel
murderer, and a sly peasant who manages to trick his adversaries.
