General D.S. Pozdnyshev: Life in a foreign land

Abstract

The article is dedicated to General Dmitry Sergeevich Pozdnyshev, a wellknown public figure of the Russian abroad. Together with the Russian army of General P.N. Wrangel D.S. Pozdnyshev evacuated to Constantinople on November 14, 1920, then moved to the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, and in 1927 to France. С.D. Pozdnyshev was active in many émigré public organizations. However, his life's work was to help thousands of maimed soldiers who suffered in World War I and the Civil War and at different times were evacuated from Russia together with the armies of A.I. Denikin and P.N. Wrangel. Since 1927 S.D. Pozdnyshev was a member of the Board of the Russian Overseas Union of Military Invalids, and from 1961 its chairman. The Union promoted the unification of emigrant organizations of invalids, established contacts with the governments of host countries of Russian emigrants to ensure their material assistance to maimed Russian soldiers, and was raising funds to support them by their own means. S.D. Pozdnyshev was actively involved in the organization of homes for the disabled, hostels, workshops and enterprises where disabled soldiers earned their living as best they could, etc. S.D. Pozdnyshev devoted his life in a foreign land to selfless assistance to compatriots. The subject of activity of the Russian Overseas Union of Military Invalids, one of the largest emigrant organizations, is little-studied in the history of Russia abroad.
