Modern historical science actively uses ego-documents as historical sources.
The article analyzes the diary of the prominent representative of the Russian intelligentsia,
the painter A.N. Benua as a source for our understanding of the revolutions of 1917. It is
emphasized that the diary allows us to reconstruct the events witnessed by Benua and
penetrate into his inner world as well as learn his attitude to what was happening.
