The article reveals the nature of political institutionalization of ethnicity. On
the example of the events of autumn of 2017 in the Spanish autonomous region of
Catalonia, the causes of the explosion of ethnic solidarity, mobilized by political elites in
the process of institutionalizing ethnic nationalism, are being analyzed.
