The Far-Right: Interplay of domestic and international threats

Novikova O.N.

Abstract

This article examines the threat of right-wing extremism, which exists in both the domestic and international dimensions. The focus of the study is on antigovernment extremist ideas and major organizations that are now coming to the fore and are assessed as a real and growing threat to the United States and beyond. The antigovernment far-right denies the legitimacy of state authorities and is fundamentally unwilling to obey their rules and regulations. It takes collective action, as well as violence and threats against politicians and government officials. This article analyzes the activities of the most influential anti-government extremist movements, the Oath Keepers and Sovereign Citizens, which are seen by authorities as a threat to the domestic security of the United States. U.S. authorities have classified people who occupied the Capitol Building, convinced that the presidential election had been rigged, as far-right terrorists. Based on political considerations, the American establishment did not want to separate far-right extremism from political dissent. The article records the process of internationalization of far-right activity. The link in the interaction between the European and American far-right is the Ukrainian party National Corps. The paper highlights the problem of the participation of foreign fighters of the far-right persuasion in the conflict in Ukraine. Their ideological motivation for coming to Ukraine is «to support Ukraine against the influence of communism and what they view as the threat of a neo-Soviet Russia». The paper shows the evolution of European leadership’s attitudes toward militants going to Ukraine, from unequivocal support to fears that foreign fighters, acting in an ideologized environment, gaining combat experience and weapons, may upon their return contribute to the strengthening of right-wing extremism in Euro-Atlantic countries by creating transnational networks of like-minded individuals.
