The Value and Valuelessness of AI-Generated Texts in the Contemporary Media Space

Abstract

The use of neural networks is currently being discussed at all levels: at the level of an Internet user, a commercial structure, and the state. The technological race is in full swing and it is already difficult to identify areas where artificial intelligence (AI) technologies have not yet reached. The legal and ethical aspects of its application are of particular concern. There are already examples of laws and regulations in the global media space that try to bring some semblance of control over the activities of AI developers, but their effectiveness at this stage is difficult to assess. Meanwhile, the capabilities of AI are growing every day, and the audience can no longer be sure that they will distinguish generated content from a human-created publication. And this is becoming an increasingly serious problem. The purpose of this article is to identify the advantages and disadvantages of AIgenerated texts and key markers that can be used to recognize such materials. The study took place in 2024–2025. The first stage is a survey of students of the journalism faculty of various courses for their opinion on the advantages and disadvantages of AI-generated texts. The survey (respondents were asked to answer 12 questions of different types) allowed for the identification of the positive and negative aspects of AI-generated texts from the perspectives of both the author and the reader. The second stage involved second-year master’s students from the same faculty creating three publications on a given topic, independently and using AI, and having their colleagues identify each author. The results of the conducted research allowed us to identify an exhaustive list of markers that are a striking distinguishing feature of the generated content.
