Chechen refugees in European countries: choice of host state and integration challenges

Seytkaliev R.M.

Abstract

The article analyzes the process of concentration of Chechen refugees in specific European countries that have become the most attractive to Chechens in terms of travel accessibility, favorable asylum approval regimes, economic benefits, and opportunities. Through an analysis of integration programs in Germany and Poland, the economic prerequisites for the relocation and settlement of Chechens in economically developed countries are demonstrated. Other factors in the concentration process are also examined, not only at the national level but also within specific regions of those countries, namely the desire to live in proximity to representatives of their own nation and, not least, to members of their own teip, which is perceived by Chechens as a guarantee of survival in a foreign country. This strengthens the economic and social ties of the emerging Chechen diaspora, although the existence of a monolithic community remains open to question. Finally, the role of the community in preserving traditional patriarchal ways of life and in resisting the erosion of value orientations is highlighted, which comes into conflict with the trend toward the liberalization of Chechen society, especially among its youth.
