Relations on both sides of the Taiwan Strait in the 21st century are one of the serious issues in the Asia-Pacific region. Resolving the «Taiwan question», as President Xi Jinping said at the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of China, «is a historical task that the Party has always striven for ... an indispensable requirement for the realization of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation», which indicates the continuation of the general party line and «One China» policy. Given that both the Taiwanese and the PRC authorities agreed in 1992 to recognize «One China», neither party in this basic agreement could determine a common interpretation of understanding the unity of China, and therefore they try to adhere to the status quo in relations. The United States, despite the lack of diplomatic relations with the island, calls Taiwan its «key partner» in the region and continue to develop economic, trade and military ties. This cannot but affect US-China relations and remains a key issue for stability in the region. Taking into account the growing role of China, a new round of increased tension in the Taiwan Strait region, the analysis of the Taiwan factor in relations between the US and China becomes relevant.
